Why read them: Aristocratic brawler and drinking poet (c. 625–c. 580 BC), Sappho's neighbour on Lesbos, who cursed the tyrant Pittacus, likened the state to a swamped ship, and held that any hour was wine hour; in Bolaño he survives only as a stanza name recited to bored fugitives in a speeding Impala — form outliving the man, which is the novel's whole joke.
